Tempest Rising by Tracy Deebs

Release Date: May 10th, 2011
Publisher: Walker Books for Young Readers
Age: Young Adult
Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.
I found myself reading more and more books about mermaids. I don't know why, but I'm liking them. Maybe because they are beautiful, maybe because they could be lethal? (yeah, I just saw Pirates of the Caribbean 4).

Anyway, I love the cover of Tempest Rising. I kept staring at it until I found a mistake on it. (Can you see it?). So when I won a pre-order of this book, I was extremely happy.

Tempest is half-mermaid. At her seventeen birthday she has to make a decision: live at the human world or under the sea? It's easy for her to choose, she is going to stay in the human world with her father, her brothers and her boyfriend Mark.

I loved Tempest. She wasn't like the typical teenager. Her strong voice made me love her from the start. She's angry with her mother for leaving her, and because she thought she could choose! But instead she's sprouting gills, she's cold and the water is calling her.

The story was kind of slow at first, but I kept reading it because I loved the writing. It was as if I could feel Tempest's emotions. Besides, the romance was hot! It's difficult to find this at a YA book. There is Mark, her sweet and sexy boyfriend. And there is Kai, hot, mysterious and irresistible...

Just when I began to wonder if something else was going to happen, Tempest enters the waters and the adventure began. I loved the idea of the underwater land and islands, and also the other creatures living on it. Tempest enter a world full of action and dangers, but also romance.

I was kind of pissed with the sea creatures because no one would say anything to Tempest. Why so many secrets? Don't they want her to help them? But I liked what Tempest discovered, and I absolutely loved the end.

Overall, Tempest Rising is an awesome book. A coming of age story, full of drama and romance; that I loved. I'm really hoping there is a sequel!
