The story revolves around three cousins—Gwen, Trudy, and Milo—descendants of powerful witches. But there's a twist: their family has been banned from practicing magic for centuries, due to a spell gone wrong in the past. Life gets complicated when a mysterious letter arrives from Gwen's 'step sister', threatening to steal one of their significant others as she has done in the past, specially to Gwen. Chaos and magical mayhem ensue as the trio tries to unravel the mystery behind the letter, while also battling the temptation to break the family's no-magic rule.
Elizabeth Bass's writing is witty and engaging, with well-drawn characters that are easy to root for. The interactions between Gwen, Trudy, and Milo are filled with humor and warmth, and their familial bond adds depth to the story. Gwen, as the main protagonist, is relatable in her struggles, torn between wanting a normal life and feeling the pull of her magical heritage. I really liked Gwen's character, she was sweet, specially with animals, and smart.
The magical elements are subtle, yet they add just the right amount of intrigue. It’s not a full-blown paranormal romance, but the sprinkling of witchcraft gives the story an extra layer of charm. I also loved the small-town setting, where everyone knows each other's business, making for some entertaining side plots and character dynamics.
The romance between Gwen and her love interest is sweet, but it doesn’t dominate the entire narrative. Instead, it unfolds naturally amidst the chaos caused by the letter. The comedic moments throughout the book had me laughing out loud, especially the magical mishaps and misunderstandings. If you enjoy romantic comedies with a bit of magic and a lot of heart, this book will definitely hit the spot.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I did find the pacing a bit slow in the beginning as the stage is set for the magical conflicts to unfold. Additionally, the side characters, although entertaining, could have been fleshed out more. I hope we get to see more development in future books of the series.
