The Empyrean Series #2

“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

Reading Order:

Book #1 Fourth Wing

Book #2 Iron Flame

Iron Flame is the second novel in the Empyrean saga, following Fourth Wing (Read my review here). It’s quite long, but rather than intimidating, it captivates you right from the start. Each chapter adds depth to a universe that combines magic, politics, and dragons with a story brimming with tension and emotion.

The author has crafted a richly detailed world that makes it easy to immerse yourself in. This time, we follow Violet, who, despite having nearly unstoppable potential and incredible dragons by her side, is held back by her own insecurities. Although frustrating, this aspect brings realism and humanity to her character, as it's a struggle many of us can relate to. The story shows that, even when we have everything needed to succeed, lack of preparation and personal doubts can become our biggest obstacles. Throughout the plot, it's clear that half of Violet’s conflicts could be resolved if she could just recognize and accept her own worth.

The relationship between Violet and Xaden undergoes significant evolution. Their bond, initially marked by distrust and secrets, slowly transforms. While it’s not a perfect relationship, we do see progress toward honesty and mutual acceptance, which is a relief amid so much tension. It’s a pleasure to see how, despite their differences, both characters begin to be more sincere and find a balance that seemed impossible at first.

One of the most endearing aspects of the book is how the characters, even the secondary ones, become very close to the reader. With each loss, each sacrifice, it’s inevitable to feel sadness. The way Yarros develops these relationships and each sacrifice reminds us that in such a ruthless world, even the most beloved characters may face an uncertain fate.

The book’s ending introduces a completely unexpected twist that leaves readers stunned. Rebecca Yarros knows how to maintain suspense, delivering a closing that, instead of resolving all conflicts, opens the door to new mysteries and challenges. I confess that, after this surprising conclusion, I’m eagerly awaiting the next book, Onyx Storm, to discover what fate has in store for Violet, Xaden, and the rest of the characters. Onyx Storm will be published on January 21, 2025.

Iron Flame is an epic novel in every sense: while it’s a bit long, it’s intense and profoundly emotional. Rebecca Yarros not only offers us a story of magic and adventure but also a reflection on self-acceptance, the power of relationships, and resilience in the face of adversity. It’s an ideal book for those looking for a story that blends emotion, insight, and surprises.
