Review: Candy for Christmas by Joanne Fluke

Candy for Christmas

by Joanne Fluke

#1.5 Hannah Swensen Mysteries series

In the Novella, Hannah Swenson, owner of The Cookie Jar, discovers that someone has broken into her store. Perhaps this individual is simply sleeping there to stay warm. Whoever this individual is, they clean up before they leave. So Hannah plans, with Norman's help, to catch the intruder in the act (and they do). What unwinds is a tale of innocence and a dysfunctional family who is reunited due to Hannah's understanding and sense of fairness.

My review:

During this time of year, I’m always on the lookout for books that bring out the Christmas spirit, so I decided to give Candy for Christmas by Joanne Fluke a try. This book, a novella that is part 1.5 of the Hannah Swensen Mysteries series, combines mystery, baking, and a touch of wintery charm.

The story follows Hannah, the protagonist of the series, as she solves a light and straightforward case. Since the book is very short, there isn’t much time to develop the characters or the plot in depth, which makes it hard to form a strong connection with them or get fully immersed in the mystery. However, it’s a quick and entertaining read, perfect for those looking for something light during the holiday season.

One thing that surprised me was that, despite its title, the book didn’t feel particularly Christmassy. The winter setting and a few small details here and there are the only things that nod to the season, but I was expecting more Christmas magic.

What I did love were the candy and cookie recipes shared at the end of each chapter. These recipes sound delicious and are definitely a highlight of the book, especially if you enjoy baking during the holidays.

In summary, Candy for Christmas is a simple and light read, great if you want to get a feel for Joanne Fluke’s series before diving into the longer books. While it’s not very deep or overly festive, it serves as a short and cozy read for this time of year. It took my a few days to read it because it's such a busy season! Also, The recipes are an extra bonus that might inspire you to try something new in the kitchen.

Would I recommend it? Yes, if you’re looking for something quick and easy. But if you prefer books with more Christmas spirit or intricate plots, this might not be the one for you.

Have you read any books in this series? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
